Commentary recommenced last night as CW Sport Radio emerged back from a 2 week enforced break to deliver coverage of the first all Cambridge women’s football match in the FA Women’s National League Div 1 South East.
The match in the fourth tier of Women’s football in England took place at Ely City’s Demcon Stadium, also the new home of Cambridge City Ladies who played host to Cambridge United Women. Despite the visitors taking an early lead, the home side fought back and in the second half two mistakes at both ends saw the game finish 2-2.
As with many of the previous matches broadcast, listeners tuned in from around the world, and last night was no exception. An audience from all over the UK, also saw listeners from Italy, Spain and the USA enjoy a fitting first match back on air. Fitting especially as Cambridge United WFC instigated the go-funding page raising their target of £1000 pounds in barely two days after Chris Walker’s laptop suffered a mishap and broke down. Donations and messages of support poured in.
I can’t thank everyone enough for their support these past 2 weeks’ following the laptop breakdown I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to do anymore commentaries and that vital publicity for grass roots non-league and women’s football would be over. I’ve been overwhelmed by the response to the go-funding campaign that until the Friday evening, I had no idea that had been started. I am eternally grateful for the thoughtful and kind actions of Cambridge United WFC, and the generosity of everyone who donated. The message of support I’ve also received have made me realise exactly how valued an respected the coverage has become and what it means to everyone”
Word also got out through social media and recently articles have appeared in The Cambridge News online as well as I appeared on both Cambridge’s Community Radio Station Cambridge 105 before last night’s commentary, and appearing on BBC 3 Counties Non-League Show on Tuesday.
You can listen back to that show here. I appeared at about 8 minutes in.
